Sex addiction rehab a thriving industry

Is sex addiction treatment big business OR is the problem growing so rapidly that treatment centers are needed? The Los Angeles Times ran an article on Monday, November 15 posing these questions and begain the article with the services the Center for Healthy Sex provides:

When she hung out her shingle as a sex addiction therapist in 1997, Alexandra Katehakis had only a handful of colleagues.

“There were five people in this field and we all knew each other,” she said.

These days, Katehakis, a licensed marriage and family therapist, has hundreds of competitors and has grown her Los Angeles solo practice into the Center for Healthy Sex, “a full-blown organization” with a team of counselors, an intensive outpatient program, a range of therapy groups, an expansive website and training for other therapists.

Celebrities have been the greatest evangelists for treatment. “My practice wouldn’t exist without them,” Katehakis said.

What is Erotic Intelligence?

What is erotic intelligence?  The word erotic means the “deliberate seeking of pleasure” and the word intelligence means the “skilled use of reason.”  Therefore, erotic intelligence means the deliberate seeking of pleasure using skilled reasoning.

Sex addicts deliberately seek pleasure, yet do so  without the skilled use of reason.  I wrote Erotic Intelligence: Igniting Hot Healthy Sex While in Recovery from Sex Addiction as a guide to assist individuals in sexual recovery to skillfully move towards healthy, intimate, and erotic sex.

Psychotherapy Networker Magazine March/April issue

“Addicted to Sex” is a case study I had published last month in the Psychotherapy Networker Magazine.  Although this magazine directs its writings to professionals, lay persons can benefit by the rich and varied information in it.

“Addicted to sex” incorporates the traditional cognitive/behavioral model of sex addiction treatment with attachment theory, privileging the therapeutic relationship and incorporating the use of the body.

Anit-gay activist accused of sexual liason with male prostitute

It’s becoming more and more common today to hear about sexual scandals of the rich and famous or political leaders.  While there’s no way to know whether or not George Alan Rekers, an anti-gay activist,  is a sex addict, the allegations in this article illustrate the gross compartmentalization that sex addicts have to have in order to live double lives. Masturbation makes you go blind!

There’s an old wives tale that says, “if you masturbate,  you’ll go blind.”  I have always thought this was one of the most ridiculous, archaic things I’d ever heard, presumably designed for puritanical reasons.  I have   wondered for years where this saying came from.  I still haven’t taken the time to research where it came from but I know one thing, it turns out to be an accurate statement!

I now understand that it doesn’t mean that a person will literally go blind from hours of masturbation, but that it means that they will figuratively go blind! Who knew?! Sex Therapy Los Angeles

Case in point: According to many news sources (google: SEC Scandal), dozens of senior officials at the SEC visited porn sites 16,000 times in one month!  A senior attorney is reported to have spent 8 hours a day looking at pornography during the years when Bernie Madoff was financially raping the country.  All of the SEC officials implicated in this scandal are reported to have been making over $200,000.00 per year – your tax dollars at work!

Again, the senior officials of the United States of America Securities and Exchange Commission were literally masturbating – compulsively – to pornography and NOT doing their job on taxpapyer’s time!

Talk about Nero fiddling while Rome was burning!!
