The purpose of the scholarships is to encourage men and women in recovery from sex addiction to enter college or to continue their education.

Scholarships may be used to pursue education for any undergraduate or graduate degree program at any accredited college or university (including seminary, medical school, or other institution of higher learning).

Is Sex Addict the New Slut?

Sex addiction has become a commonly used phrase in popular culture. Tiger Woods, Eliot Spitzer, Anthony Weiner, and countless other men of means and power have put faces and identities to problematic and destructive sexual behaviors. For eons, people have labeled heavy drinkers as “alcoholics,” those who can’t leave the office until 10:00pm as “workaholics,” and now the term “sex addict” seems to have reached that level of fancy name-calling aimed at those who exhibit promiscuous behaviors. But is sex addiction merely a high level of promiscuity? Sex addiction and high levels of sexual activity are not one in the same, and blurring of the two within pop culture is misleading and dangerous. The problem associated with labeling sex addicts as the “new sluts” is clear to me, especially given that sex addiction actually has little to do with the act of sex, and much more to do with the underlying negative core beliefs that lead the addict down this self-destructive path in the first place.

Many argue that mental health clinicians are trying to create a disease out of an innate biological function that is fundamentally unlike ingesting a chemical into the body. It is likely the debate around the origins of sexual compulsivity will continue on, but all seem to agree that effects of it can prove devastating. Ruined relationships, lost jobs, sexually transmitted diseases, and isolation are just a few of the byproducts of a sexually compulsive way of life. So then, what is the difference between promiscuous behavior and sex addiction? Patrick Carnes, a leader in the field of sex addiction, addresses this in his book Out of the Shadows: Understanding Sexual Addiction, “Generally, addicts do not perceive themselves as worthwhile persons. Nor do they believe that other people would care for them or meet their needs if everything was known about them, including the addiction. Finally, they believe that sex is their most important need. Sex is what makes isolation bearable. If you do not trust people, one thing that is true about sex (and alcohol, food, gambling, and risk) is that it always does what it promises, for the moment.” When viewed through the Carnes lense, and given the intense pain endured by the addict, it is clear that sex addiction and promiscuity are very different matters. Having multiple sexual partners and avoiding “settling down” does not necessarily mean one is engaging in compulsive, or addictive, behaviors. For example, many who engage in polyamory believe their connections are based on trust, and experienced as intimate and fulfilling. There are no hints of worthlessness or isolation, the cornerstones of Carnes’s description of the sexually addicted and compulsive. The relationship a sex addict has with the compulsive behavior is akin to the relationship alcoholics and drug addicts develop with their drugs of choice. It becomes a maladaptive means to cope with the shame and anxiety that always accompany the worthlessness and isolation. The rush of dopamine and adrenaline provide a temporary reprieve from this pain, just like alcohol and drugs. So, if we all agree the “fix” provided by various chemicals can be addictive, destructive, and thus potentially life threatening, why would this “fix” be any different? I believe this type of addiction can ultimately be far more difficult to conquer. It’s very important that sex addiction is viewed as a serious problem that warrants treatment and deep healing, not just brushed aside as the rich and powerful behaving badly.

On the matter of Weiner, this guy has all the signs and symptoms of sexually addictive behaviors. You might think his arrogance is shocking then be fooled by his willingness to apologize over and over again. Don’t let the apology fool you. He will act out again if he doesn’t get help because he can’t stop himself.

Heavy Internet porn use is not fun

Men, women, and teens are getting caught in the web of on-line pornography and, sometimes, can’t get out. With the advent of more free porn than ever before and high levels of accessibility, porn addiction is on the rise.

A study in the UK of 1,057 adults aged 18-24 shows that looking at more than 10 hours a week of porn can have detrimental effects on desire for sex with a partner. Porn is rapidly becoming a substitute for actual sex because, for one thing, it takes less work than intimate engagement with a partner. Attaching to pornography can negatively impact the users ability to get aroused with a real person, and it can sometimes take months before a natural sexual arousal will return.

The article states:

Men who look at porn for 10 hours a week are much more likely to worry it is influencing their behaviour, the survey suggested.

Higher numbers of those heavy users said their porn viewing had upset a partner or caused them to miss a meeting at work.

Men looking at porn for at least 10 hours a week were also more likely to say it can put them off real-life sex.

Scientists discover new stress neuropathway

Everyone experiences some kind of stress in their lives but traumatic stress impacts some people more than others. It seems that some people are more susceptible to the impact of stress on the brain, creating anxiety or depressive disorders. Sex addicts, and sometimes their partners, can suffer from both anxiety or depression or both due to childhood trauma.

Here is an excerpt from the study:

“The study found that the emotional centre of the brain - the amygdala - reacts to stress by increasing production of a protein called neuropsin. This triggers a series of chemical events which in turn cause the amygdala to increase its activity. As a consequence, a gene is turned on that determines the stress response at a cellular level.”

In other words, the real person doesn’t activate the dopamine system in the brain so no excitement registers.

Story of a “dark marriage”- living with a sex addict

This memoir, written by a widow who discovered, upon her husband’s death after almost 50 years of marriage, that he had a double life, affairs with men and gay porn, and he was $70 thousand dollars in debt. The memoir is about her reflecting back on her life and trying to figure out “what do I know that I didn’t know I knew until now?” Her husband, a well-regarded editor of Atlantic Monthly, was an emotionally abusive alcoholic and she of course, had grown up in an abusive family, making her a primary candidate to marry an addict.

Sexual Behaviors in the United States: A Study

Michael Reece, Ph.D. and his colleagues at the Center for Sexual Health Promotion at Indiana University
recently released results from the National Survey of Sexual Health and Behavior (NSSHB), a study based on answers from 5,865 Americans between the ages of 14-94. “This survey is one of the most expansive
nationally representative studies of sexual behavior and condom use ever conducted, given the 80-year span of [participants’] ages,” Reece says. The Journal of Sexual Medicine publishednine papers (using NSSHB data) by Indiana University researchers in its October issue. In addition to Reece, the research team included
Debby Herbenick, PhD, Stephanie Sanders, PhD, J. Dennis Fortenberry, MD, MS, VanessaSchick, PhD, and Brian Dodge, PhD. Sex Therapy Los Angeles

Perhaps the most wide-ranging of the studies is titled, “Sexual Behaviors in the United States: Results from
a National Probability Sample of Men and Women Aged 14-94.” That report includes data on masturbation (alone and partnered), oral sex (receiving and giving), vaginal intercourse and anal intercourse (receiving
and inserting) categorized by nearly a dozen age ranges.

Among the findings:
• The proportion of people having vaginal sex is highest for men ages 25-39 and women ages 20-
29. As might be expected, the frequency of vaginal sex declines with age.

• Masturbation is common among all age groups, but never dips below 33 percent (for those masturbating alone at least once in the past year). The highest rates were among individuals ages 25-29: 84 percent for men and 72 percentfor women.
• Oral sex was rare among 14- to 15-year-olds, but 18 percent of 16- to 17-year-old males and 22 percent of 16- to 17-year-old females engaging in oral sex in the past year.
• About one-fifth of men ages 25-49 and women ages 20-39 engaged in anal sex in the past year.

Is sex addiction treatment big business OR is the problem growing so rapidly that treatment centers are needed? The Los Angeles Times ran an article on Monday, November 15 posing these questions and begain the article with the services the Center for Healthy Sex provides:

When she hung out her shingle as a sex addiction therapist in 1997, Alexandra Katehakis had only a handful of colleagues.

“There were five people in this field and we all knew each other,” she said.

These days, Katehakis, a licensed marriage and family therapist, has hundreds of competitors and has grown her Los Angeles solo practice into the Center for Healthy Sex, “a full-blown organization” with a team of counselors, an intensive outpatient program, a range of therapy groups, an expansive website and training for other therapists.

Celebrities have been the greatest evangelists for treatment. “My practice wouldn’t exist without them,” Katehakis said.

Recently in Federal Court, Mr. Woods represented the Log Cabin Republicans, a nonprofit organization, pro bono in a challenge to the Government’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, which prevents gays and lesbians from openly revealing their sexuality or risk discharge. The lawsuit was seeking a ruling that the policy violates constitutional protections of due process, equal protection, and freedom of speech

Just this month a Federal Judge in California struck down the discriminatory federal policy barring gays and lesbians from serving openly in the military. U.S. District Judge Virginia A. Phillips said the ban violated the first amendment and due process rights of gay and lesbian service members. The judge will issue an injunction to halt the policy, but the Justice Department can appeal.

Craigslist shuts down adult services listing

A twenty-four year old medical student murdered a masseuse he found off Craigslist then killed himself while in prison for the crime. After investigating the crimes, the state attorney generals have ordered Craigslist to shut down their adult services listing. Sex Addiction Treatment Los Angeles

Masturbation makes you go blind!

There’s an old wives tale that says, “if you masturbate, you’ll go blind.” I have always thought this was one of the most ridiculous, archaic things I’d ever heard, presumably designed for puritanical reasons. I have wondered for years where this saying came from. I still haven’t taken the time to research where it came from but I know one thing, it turns out to be an accurate statement!

I now understand that it doesn’t mean that a person will literally go blind from hours of masturbation, but that it means that they will figuratively go blind! Who knew?! Sex Therapy Los Angeles

Case in point: According to many news sources (google: SEC Scandal), dozens of senior officials at the SEC visited porn sites 16,000 times in one month! A senior attorney is reported to have spent 8 hours a day looking at pornography during the years when Bernie Madoff was financially raping the country. All of the SEC officials implicated in this scandal are reported to have been making over $200,000.00 per year - your tax dollars at work!

Again, the senior officials of the United States of America Securities and Exchange Commission were literally masturbating - compulsively - to pornography and NOT doing their job on taxpapyer’s time!

Cybersex can be as much of a threat to relationships as other infidelities are. It’s important to set boundaries in your relationship and have explicit conversations about what is okay and what isn’t.

Talk about your life together. It’s crucial to talk to one another while in relationship and decide what is okay for you as a couple. Discuss what infidelity means to you both and set those boundaries. Talk to one another about whether it is okay for your partner to look at online pornography. Do you want to be present when he/she does that or does it matter to you? How do you feel about your partner contacting other people via the web for cybersex? Make sure that you and your partner keep current about what does and doesn’t work for you.

Does cybersex take up a lot of time? One of the earmarks of any of addiction is a loss of time. How much time do you spend on the Internet. Does it take time away from your erotic life with your partner? Does it diminish your sexual desire for your partner? If you are devoting more time to online sexual activities than your partner, then you are creating a breach to intimacy in your relationship and can also be a sign of a cybersex addiction.

Secret, shaming, or abusive. If you become secretive about your on-line behavior then that is a sure sign that you have a problem. It doesn’t matter whether you are hiding what you are doing, how much time you are spending, the sites you are visiting, or the people you are talking to. If a behavior is secretive, shaming, or abusive to yourself or others - you have a problem.

CA State Assemblyman Resigns

The Los Angeles Times reports that State Assemblyman Mike Duvall resigned on Wednesday, Sepbember 9 after his lewd comments about women he had been sexually involved with were inadvertently broadcast over an open microphone during a lull in a Sacramento hearing in July.

This is another example of the split we see in sex addicts all the time. Mr. Duvall is a Republican, pro-family advocate who has clearly lead a double life. I’m not saying that he’s definately a sex addict but his behaviors certainly make him suspect. Sex Addiction Los Angeles

12-Step wisdom cautions that relapse can only occur when opportunity and desire meet. That wisdom therefore suggests “Stay away from People, Places and Things,” to minimize your opportunities. Now, a scientific study shows that doing so not only minimizes the opportunity to relapse, but your desire as well. There is a long list of other program tools for minimizing the desire to relapse. Of course, minimizing and replacing both the desire and the opportunity as much as you can is still a big part of what recovery is all about!

Gay or Not Gay?

Do you think it’s beneficial for some people to reject their gay or lesbian attractions? In an article entitled “A New Therapy on Faith and Sexual Identity” in the Wall Street Journal, The American Psychological Association says that it can be. When people are tormented by their sexual orientation because it conflicts with their religious beliefs, changing their sexual compass may bring them relief.

This is not meant to be the old “conversion therapy” that “cures” people out of their homosexuality but will certainly create controversy nonetheless.

Premature Ejaculation in Pakistan

Some time at the beginning of 2009 I got an email in my info@centerforhealthysex box from a man named ”Michael” in Pakistan. He wrote that he was suffering from high anxiety and premature ejaculation and had the courage to reach out and ask me for help. Knowing that his problem was not unusual and fairly easy to address, I referred him to two books I thought would be helpful. To my surprise, he wrote back telling me he was a student who could not afford to purchase books and had no means to charge books on-line. Sex Therapy Los Angeles

Buying a book on-line is a basic transaction in my world so I was taken aback that this simple activity was a hardship for him. So I decided to buy the books for ”Michael” and mail them to him in Pakistan. After a debacle with a bookseller on Amazon and a number of communiques with ”Michael” as we waited for the books to arrive at my office, I finally sent the books via US mail. I have to say I was not that confident that he would get them because his address was so convoluted. It read something like this: the name of his employer, across from the butcher shop, next to the bank, Pakistan and a postal code of sorts (I’m not kidding!)

Ten days later, ”Michael” received the books and sent me a thank you note. He was incredibly grateful and began reading them. After a few months, I received an email from him letting me know his progress. I think you might be as moved as I was when you read his note. It reminded me how little it takes to help someone restore their sexuality. For those of you who have more access and resources than ”Michael” did, I hope this inspires you to reach out and get help.

Once I was very worried about my P E. I was unable to know why it occurs.
I used to ejaculate within a minute . Luckily I got two useful books recommended me by honourable Miss Alexandra Katehakis. The name of one book is : Coping with Premature Ejaculation written by Michael E Metz and Barry W Mc Carthy. The book has a biopsychosocial approach which has not only helped me substantially to control rapid ejaculation, but also increased my sexual joy. For the first time, I understood the multi causal and multidimensional problem of Premature Ejaculation and to enjoy sex with enhanced ejaculatory control. The book presents different diagnostic methods and tools to scientifically evaluate and assess P.E. I came to know exactly in what type of P E, I was suffering from. I also found the psycho sexual exercises very useful.
The other book that was recommended me was : Anxiety and Phobia Workbook written by Edmund J Bourne. For most people, P E is caused by anxiety. The book has a holistic approach to overcoming anxiety, phobia, depression etc. When I learned how to manage my anxiety, I gained good control of my P E.
In short I found these two books very beneficial and I recommend these books to all those guys who are worried about their premature ejaculation. I am still on the path of progress.

Was David Carradine a Sex Addict?

It’s difficult to answer that question with certainty but given the information in the article posted below, it doesn’t look good for the fallen Kung-Fu actor. Sex Addiction Los Angeles

Not everyone who dies of a sexually-related death is a sex addict. But according to his ex-wives (he had five), he engaged in potentially leathel sexual behaviors when seemed to escalate over time. Developing a tolerance is one of the ear-marks of sex addiction.

Did he ultimately kill himself due to his preference for tying himself up? It sure looks that way. Although one of his ex-wives states that he used to tie himself up, the reports of the condition he was in when found dead indicate that there was another party present.

I’m no Sherlock Holmes but my speculation is that the sex-play went awry with one or both parties pushing the envelope too far. When it was clear that Mr. Carradine was dead, his sexual partner fled the scene.

Whether or not pornography is good for a culture or not is a complicated topic. On the one hand the right to print and view porn is a free speech issue, and on the other hand it can be a human rights issue. Many young men and women die every year due to overdose, suicide, homicide, and accidents due to the torment they are going through working in porn films.

Although I don’t have an answer about what is “right” and what is “wrong” where the availability of porn is concerned, former porn actress, Shelley Luben does. She has created a crusade to help people get out of the porn industry. Her site does anything but glamorize an industry that chews people up and spits them out.

Sex addiction and eating disorders

The two behavioral addictions that most resemble one another, and often go hand-in-hand, are sex addiction and eating disorders. Both of these problems are difficult to change because the human race can’t survive without sex or food. I feared it was a matter of time before we began to see young women, and men, turning to the sex industry to make ends meet. This article on the msnbc website tells us just that. With the loss of jobs and financial struggles many are having, young women are turning to stripping.

Often young women think they can handle the work and tell themselves that it’s just a “temporary” solution until they get back on their feet financially. It has been an exhilerating weekend of creative ideas coming together to form a standard of care for women who struggle with these painful and challenging problems.

By the end of the weekend tangible tasks and important goals were put into motion, one of which is a book that will assist mental health professionals in providing the best care for female sex and love addicts.

“Men’s Sexual Health,” by Barry W. Mccarthy and Michael E. Metz is a must read for men! This is a well researched book full of useful information for optimal sexual health. The author’s state, “Anything good for your physical body will be good for your sexuality, and anything that subverts your physical body will subvert your sexuality”.In that, they are saying that fitness is critical for everyone especially men over 40. The author’s remind us that behavioral habits like sleep, exercise, eating, drinking, drug use and smoking are key.Chronic health problems like sleep apnea, sleeping less than 5 hours per night, depression and irrability have a major negative impact on sexuality. Smoking is major contributor to erectile dysfunction and medications for blood pressure control can have an impact on desire and erection. We are reminded that stress is the number one killer of sexual desire in the body and the authors recommend that men take a semi annual vacation. “Take all your allotted vacation and personal time” and take “micro vacations” i.e. movie, concert, sporting event and concentrate on this as a microvacation from stress.

They recommend that you change your exercise program with age.Don’t do the workout at 40 that you were doing at 20.Look for activities that increase respiration, cardiac output and vascular system heal.All these will improve your sexual vitality and function! Sensuality, looking at how you treat your body, how you workout - “appreciate your maleness and your sexuality at every age of your life.
