I need to express my concern over the potential risk that Dr. Magness 'program creates by using the lie detector test on sex addicts (who rely on lies to enable their habits). The uncertainty and potential inaccuracy of the system, coupled with the deceiving nature of sex addicts, creates a significant risk to families who put their faith in this process. Based on our family’s experience - had my husband wanted to take advantage of the opportunities offered to him, this program would have given him the impression that his actions and behaviors were good. Likewise, had I bought into the results, I could have believed the same. Should a serious offender have the same experience in this program, the results could be disastrous and potentially dangerous to women and children. The addict gets a stamp for a “clean bill of health” and the family is blissfully unaware of the careful orchestration behind the scenes. My husband was instructed on his answers on the associated paperwork, and the questions were not targeted to the real issues. Anyone can pass a question that doesn’t target their specific issues.

Couples need to be given a great deal more education on the accuracy of lie detector testing so that they further evaluate the validity of it and consequently make an informed decision. As it is, your program offers a great deal of concern!

Wow. This is mind-numbing information. If everyday life on this planet is causing this much anxiety, this much inability to express ourselves, we need to find a way to learn to live a more connected way of being and doing.

Great post. If we could only take morality out of the issue more often, perhaps we could make some headway with getting our society to take a deeper look at the cost of obsession and obsessive behaviors, and the cost of the unhealthy attitudes toward sexuality that are acceptable and even promoted in mainstream culture.

Dear Doctor

The reason I believe prostitution should be legal is not because "it forces the people participating in it to face terrible consequences because they are often not protected by the law.", as you said, but, on the contrary, because where it's legal, like in Brazil, it provides an incalculable benefit in terms of learning about women's sexuality for many men. Myself, I had hundreds of encounters with prostitutes, not in the USA where prostitution and illegal in almost every state, but in Brazil and Europe, and I assure you that the knowledge gained was very useful for my relations with "regular" women . I never had a problem with prostitutes (neither I know somebody who had). The risk increases when the illegality pushes the activity of prostitution in the hands of organized crime, as often happens in the USA. In the USA, unfortunately, feminism and the ideology of "political correctness" continue to prevent millions of people to enjoy a freer and healthy sexuality. The results are known: widespread neuroses, homosexuality and deranged gunmen who seek revenge for their sexual frustration ...

best,

Dear Doctor

I cannot this obsession with prostitution, that is an activity that harms nobody. Don't you think that is incoherent to engage in treating people on sexual problems and having such a strictly puritan view about sexuality? Why sexuality should be addressed mainly from the point of view of "addiction"?? Aren't you guys covert moralists??

P.S. the last time my post hasn't been published...(censorship?)

regards,

I disagree from your stance on prostitution. I truly believe that prostitution is a necessity for men's healthy sexual life. The problem arises when we have human traffic and sexual slavery, but the Spitzer case has nothing to do with that. in this case, criticism arose from moralism and bigotry.

Yves....yeah....they choose the profession just like they chose to be abused and molested in their childhood. People often make "choices" which any real understanding of what drives them. If the people participating in the porn industry where offered the help they needed before they entered the industry, I bet their "choice" would be different. Yes, many industries chew people up and spit them out, but most people don't have to risk being raped, exposed to disease, and abused. Don't get me wrong, I feel those in the porn industry need to take responsibility for themselves, but to indicate that they chose this and the ramifications are perfectly acceptable is insane.

I don't think this is judgemental at all. People who sell themselves sexually end up broken and demoralized. I can see how someone starts out innocently enough thinking they will just do it temporarily until they get back on their feet, but having sex with strangers is a little different than taking a second job waiting tables. You don't come out of it the same as you were going in. Quite frankly, anyone who actually goes through with it probably wasn't healthy to begin with. I feel sorry for these people, but it's their choice at the end of the day and they will pay the price emotionally.

There are many industries that are well known to "chew people up and spit them out". Entertainment is and has been well noted to be ruthless. Ask the thousand of has-been stars and wannabe's how difficult this is. The movie Swimming with sharks is a good example.
Remember that these people chose this profession. That is a vast difference from a slave sold and used.

Soma acts directly on the central nervous system (CNS) by blocking pain sensations between the nerves and the brain. People who have sustained physical injury or trauma may have initially been prescribed Soma and then become dependent on its pain-killing effects even after the injury has healed. Soma is often combined with other drugs or alcohol to enhance the effect. Because it can be habit-forming, it should only be used as prescribed and never transferred to another person. The effective treatment solution of soma is available in various rehab centers and residential school at reasonable prices.

I recently discovered my boyfriends dark secret which he’s kept from me the entire time we’ve been together. We’ve always been open and had a good relationship, but I felt there was something he kept from me.

A few weeks ago- that “something” smacked me in the face. I found a hidden file on our computer with nude pictures of women- all shapes, sizes and ages- but not just adult film women- like real every day women, taking pictures of themselves naked. Then I found a folder with images of my boyfriend. Some of these images were from before we were together and other were taken the whole time we’ve been together. I could see the date the photos were taken. There were some where in the mirror you could see where I wrote ” i love you” and him standing there masterbating and taking the pic. Others were taken in our new home we just built this summer. I then found images of a “friend” of his that I never really trusted. He swore to me so many times they were just friends from when they were teenagers.

Obviously I was mad and hurt. I broke into his myspace account and wrote this so called “friend”. I sent her a message saying that I knew what was going on and called her all kinds of names. Im not saying it was right, but I wasnt thinking clearly at the time. I also messaged her boyfriend and let him know what her actions had been. Later that night my boyfriend came home. I yelled at him for a while, then insisted he call this girl and end their “friendship”. we talked all night and cried. Somehow we went to work the next day.

In the last few weeks we’ve gone to therapy 3 times and he’s joined a local 12 step program. we are able to talk about things and have progressed in some small areas. I still dont trust him. His computer access has been limited and he must have my supervison, per the therapist. i also have access to his email and his myspace/facebook accounts have been deleted.

he’s cried and told me several times that he knows this wasnt right and he wants to make our relationship stronger. He swears to me this never went further than text images and the web. Somehow am I suppose to trust that?

The therapist believes he used this “act” to cover pain and grief from losing his mother and an ending relationship prior to ours, since thats when he began this act.

every day i think about what we are going thru, the images of those women and him pop in my head all the time. I cry, get mad, get scared, and feel numb out of no where.

we are able to talk when we both have feelings. i want to have the confiedence this issue will be something we can work pass, something that will be hard but somehow make us a stronger couple.

its hard to have that confidence when i never thought this person would ever hurt me like this, and now that all my trust with him is lost, i have to learn to trust him again. in no way do i believe i deserved this, caused this or should have to live with this.

he knows the ball is in his court. i will support him, go to therapy and talk as much as needed, but he is the one who brought this into our relationship and he will be the one to prove he can overcome his addiction and be a better partner.

Its been made very aware to him, not as a threat, that this will not occur again. I will not stick around and allow him to treat me in this way. It may hurt to leave, but it would hurt even more to repeat this.

A friend of mine had this issue several years ago with her now husband, only it began shortly after their engagement. She swears by therapy and the 12 step program. She said that it takes time and rebuilding trust, but it is something that can be worked thru. I really hope she's right.

There are many Addiction Treatments Centers; they have designed their programs to care for those people who are greatly affected by alcohol Addiction and other addiction. In their programs they also provide Alcohol Outpatients Program which is the main program in addiction treatments.

Drugs and alcohol abuse
Create many problems for their own life. They use illegal substance for artificial enjoyment and to reduce tension for few moments. People who are interested to withdrawal addiction can take help of any nearest rehabilitation center.

One of your most ancient writers, a historian named Herodotus, tells of a
thief who was to be executed. As he was taken away he made a bargain with
the king: in one year he would teach the king's favorite horse to sing
hymns. The other prisoners watched the thief singing to the horse and
laughed. "You will not succeed," they told him. "No one can."
To which the thief replied, "I have a year, and who knows what might
happen in that time. The king might die. The horse might die. I might die.
And perhaps the horse will learn to sing.

the king: in one year he would teach the king’s favorite horse to sing
hymns. The other prisoners watched the thief singing to the horse and
laughed. “You will not succeed,” they told him. “No one can.”
To which the thief replied, “I have a year, and who knows what might
happen in that time. The king might die. The horse might die. I might die.
And perhaps the horse will learn to sing.

I have been told by experts in the area of sexually addiction that I do have this problem of sexual anorexia. However, it has also been determined that my spouse is an acute sex addict. Over the years I developed a repulsive feeling for him and if he would try to initiate sexual activity I could not respond. His attempts only made me ill to the point where I wanted to throw up.

I prefer messes to unmanageability. I realized that I have given up every hobby I ever had - I was a great cook, I went to dance and concerts, I collected music, etc. All gone or greatly diminished. Got to the point after my wife left where I was holding onto a job by the barest of threads and then acting out or recovering from acting out all the rest ofthe time

I think Judge Edward Nottingham deprived me of my rights because he was blackmailed for being a sex addict. He put me in jail for representing myself in court, which is a right by statute. I was told I was not allowed a lawyer or an evidentiary hearing. After 5 months of jail he said :"whoops". I think he was blackmailed because of sex addition. See

Alexandra,
Great meeting you out there, and look forward to our ongoing conversations. Appreciate your insights - so interesting to find how you and your colleagues there have connected with every aspect of the complexity of the recovery process.

Many remain in the dark ages regarding compulsive, impulsive and addictive behaviors thinking these presenting symptoms are *only psychologically based*... leaving treatment almost completely one dimensional, and missing the reality of biologically based brain dysregulation.

And, as I mentioned in my post about the meeting, many of you have been looking more deeply for years. Deep and comprehensive thinking is more likley to bring consistent recovery practice.

Look forward to working together, and will link to your blog over at CorePsych-
Thanks
Chuck

Pornography's ubiquitousness in 2008 is frightening. While I don't believe in government censorship, necessarily, I do hope there is some way to keep this away from young people.

As an addict, it is hard not to view pornography, etc as the devil, as for us..well, it is. But, at the same time I realize some people can use adult material responsibly, just like I can drink and not be an alcoholic.

I understand this dilemma. As someone who works with people dealing with compulsive sexual behavior, I suppose it's obvious which side of the equation I would fall on. That said, I am not going to become an anti-porn crusader. I think it's helpful to view this like the alcohol and prohibition debates in the last century. In retrospect it seems obvious that prohibition was never going to be the right solution, because some people are able to use alcohol without abusing and/or becoming addicted to it. We've decided as a society to let people drink if they want to, and focus our interventions on people who are getting into trouble. The same is true with sexual behaviors of various kinds. Why argue with people about sexual behaviors they don't feel are problematic? Let's just focus on people who are trying to change or stop behaviors, and realizing that they can't.

Sex addiction certainly does exist! And it is an addiction just like gambling, alcohol, or drugs. And I know because I am trying to recover from this problem. You can read my blog to learn more about me.
I am however against the closing down of sex-related establishments. Its better to have the activity legal ,and in a controlled environment rather than have the whole sex industry go undergound. People should be free to choose, but they should also have unlimited access to information regarding the risks of sex addiction.

I wonder why, when the research proves 12 Step programs to have at least a 70 percent long term failure rate, professionals continue to expouse this?

Every single person I know who attended 12 Step failed and failed and failed. Yet there are alternatives that have more stickiness than the cult of 12 Step.

It's very curious.

Another source for women about their sexuality are books that deal honestly in a positive way with the subject of the female body and eroticism.

I think what you are offering here is great information for those who are suffering from the often unnoticed problem of sexual addiction.

I also think your readers would be interested in hearing about my place of employment, Healing for the Soul Counseling which specializes in treating those with sexual addictions.

Furthermore we offer a weekly radio broadcast, The Blazing Grace Show, as an awareness and encouragement resource for those trying to overcome their addiction.

You can find more information about our counseling and radio program at:

I'm not surprise at Ted Haggard admitting to his sexual addiction. In fact I am more surprised that more clergy are not exposed.

Church leadership and the church in general are filled with those struggling with sex addiction.

Many who suffer for sex addiction baptize themselve in the Bible and church service in an effort to rid themselves of their addiction.

Consequently their perceived devotion to God elevates them to church leadership.

Eventually the pressure of leadership and the guilt of living a double life takes its toll.

Often those who promoted them in the beggining are the very one's who throw rocks once they fall.

Highly in favor of filter and web site protective device to safeguard children against pornography but for an adult who sees surfing pornography as a way to unwind after a hard day's work it's entirely another matter. Adults should be responsible for their actions lest they be supervised as children.

i checked out SARR to see what it said about Joe Zychik, (whom i was looking for information about and how i found your site, then SARR)... anyway, seems like, if nothing else, there's ALOT of resources available and fairly well organized into categories such as "for addicts", "for partners", and "for couples", etc.

I loved reading your post on the 30 year old who suffered from a sex addiction. I related to it so much. I too suffer from a sex addiction as well as a love addiction. Just like Russell, the 30 year old in your post, I start getting excited while I prepare to go out to meet men. I am married, but I am out of control when it comes to NEEDING other men to be attracted to me and want me. Anyway, I have a love and sex addiction blog as well. It is http://www.addictiontolove.com/ . This blog lets the viewers follow me through discovery of my addiction throughout my recovery... such as Therapy, SLAA meetings and Recovery Assignments. I am just so thrilled to have read your amazing story. Thanks for sharing with us and helping people overcome this debilitating addiction.

Alexandria, thanks for this great post. I've only recently become aware of mirror neurons and the studies that have been accomplished. This is great stuff, and I really understood and appreciated the transference/countertranference example. There are many implications for this information, it explains a lot. I've noticed how excited i get when watching tennis on tv, but don't get interested in football or other sports because I can't relate, my neurons aren't activated. The obvious implication for pornography, is one of those "of course" moments of understanding. I'll be posting about parts of this on my Brain-FX blog, as soon as i can.

When you say we need to stay on our side of the fence, I couldn't agree more. I have a saying that I tell clients to help stress this point: "Changing me, changes we."
We are so skilled at looking at others we forget to look at ourselves. I'm glad to hear you are sending such a great message that so many of us don't want to hear yet need to hear.
