Clearly, a lot of folks just don't get it! It's also interesting to see how uncomfortable people are talking about sex without going into uncomfortable, goofy parodies about it. In this video clip, Ali Wentworth shows us her lack of understanding about sex addiction and her general discomfort with talking about sex. She says the word "masturbation" as if it's some dirty, shameful thing that shouldn't be spoken. What are your thoughts?

As a father, have you had an appropriate sex talk with your teenage daughter? Many men don't due to their discomfort with the topic but it's crucial for a girl coming into her sexuality to have a sense that her father cares in an appropriate way. Although challenging, this conversation can have a lasting impact on your daughter and your relationship with her. By reaching out and initiating the conversation, you are modeling intimacy to her and you'll most likely leave the conversation with the two of you feeling closer to one another.

Do you wonder about your sex life and what's "normal?" Do you talk to your friends about their sexuality and compare your sexual activity to theirs? Most of us don't know what "healthy sex" is because we've never stopped to ask ourselves questions about who we are sexually.
Struggling with low sexual desire, anxiety in the form of premature ejaculation, having painful sex or feeling like you aren't really sure of who you are sexually are all reasons to seek sex therapy. Many people avoid sex therapy because they are embarrassed to admit they have a problem. I would venture to say that most people have sexual issues throughout the lifespan due to changing ideas, bodies, values and desires.

A sixty year old man from Tuscaloosa gives us a clear definition of what sex addiction is:
“You have a pleasure center in the back of your brain and when you’re masturbating those chemicals are being released in your pleasure center,” he said. “But what happens is pornography gets boring and your pleasure center wants more so you escalate from softcore porn to hardcore, from strip clubs to prostitution. It’s like starting on marijuana and then moving to crack cocaine so you can reach the same pleasure release you had the first time you got high. That’s why you get deeper and deeper into an addiction.”

For those of you who don't already know, David Duchovny star of Showtime's "Californication," entered treatment for sexual addiction last week. I want to commend Mr. Duchovny and his wife for their courage in being honest about his problem.
It turns out that their courage in coming forward about his addiction has already inspired thousands of people to investigate whether or not they have a probelm with this issue. Sexhelp.com, the website that hosts Patrick Carnes' Sexual Addiction Screening Test, has been overrun with thousands of people trying to access the test.

More and more, women are asking themselves questions about their sexual health and what sexuality means to them. Our culture portrays women in all sorts of roles and each woman’s family has perscribed roles and rules about what it means to be a woman and how that woman should behave and feel about her sexulaity.
Because there are so many choices today, women have to manage the anxiety they feel about defining their sexuality and the kind of relatinships they want to be in. Sex therapy can often be very helpful in sorting out these questions.
